Too bad more Black tumblr bloggers don’t care about sports (or at least not the ones I follow). The intersection of race, class, gender & sexual orientation in sports is woefully understudied & underreported, but definitely problematic in terms of representation, sponsorship and reporting. I’d love to do more with this….but I don’t have the time/effort.

YES I agree. A lot of the people I follow are the same, but I agree

Allen Iverson is the most important Black athlete in the past two decades.

Sir I’m pretty sure MJ was still playing basketball in 1992. I mean I like AI, but still MJ is the GOAT.

But yes OP! God yes!

Important not best. Allen Iverson is FAR more important and representative of Black male identity and masculinity. He drastically changed the NBA twice in his career via the way the NBA still advertises itself to this day and the entire dress code. Not to even getting into his high school career.

That’s true.

You right. Now I’m thinking of all the headbands, wristbands, braids, etc. that people started wearing/having after he came out. You right. I was thinking bout it wrong.

I’m sorry, but Iverson is definitely not the most important Black person of the last 2 decades. All that you stated about him is true, but I definitely don’t agree with that statement. Maybe for basketball, but for all sports? No. I would definitely put the Williams sisters above him in terms of importance.

He said Black male identity and masculinity, so he was prolly talkin in terms of Black male athletes. Then again Idk. I’m not him. So it could be overall, Black males, or Black (male) NBA players.

I understand he said male, but he also said “most important Black athlete” and I assumed that referred to ALL Black athletes.
